Awesome

A while back I had a faceache whinge about inappropriate use of the word 'awesome'. It crops up so often as a result of American (TV) cultural hegemony. It litters the speech of American youth to a similar extent to the use of 'like' by British youth.

I have been privileged to see two truly awesome things in my life. Mount St. Helens and it's surrounding zone of devastation which I visited a decade or so after she blew her top. The landscape there is simply other worldly. The scale of the destruction is staggering.

The other was the full solar eclipse visible in the UK in the 90s. I've forgotten the date and time. It was a cloudy day with no glimpse of the sun. I was sat high up on the western edge of Dartmoor which has a view miles to the west across Cornwall. From this vantage point I saw the shadow of totality sweep in across the twilight penumbra vista at great speed, followed by the reverse event after a minute or so of night. I just got this very powerful sense of the immense masses and angular momentums of celestial mechanics which was very profound and belittling.

Like totally awesome dudes!
